Being on a road trip on your motorcycle or whether you are just going for a nice Sunday cruise, knowing what to do when there is an injury is of great importance. Accidents can happen so quickly and when you are in the middle of nowhere and you cannot get to the hospital quick enough, you will need to know how to stabilize the injured until you an reach the nearest healthcare practice.

What These Courses Will Teach You

There are a number of things that you will be taught at a course, such as how to treat burns, what to do if someone is in shock, how to give CPR, and many other things. These first aid training courses can be taken through organizations like the Red Cross or the American Heart Association.

American Heart Association CPR Instructor Course

If you take part in American Heart Association CPR instructor courses then you will also be able to teach others about how to give first aid. You will also learn about what your first aid kit should include so that you can always keep one with you in your car and in your home. There are various levels of courses that one can take and the basic ones are always available throughout the year in all different areas. You can easily find a course to join in your home town. You can call the association of your choice, or you can also find the info you require on the internet about where the courses are going to be held.

Looking At The Costs Involved

Some courses that are offered are not very expensive, and some beginner courses are actually offered for free in some places. You will usually need to pay a small fee though to pay for the instructor, the documents and papers that you receive and for the small starter first aid kit that you get.

Courses For The Whole Family

There are course that are available for adults, and children as well, and this would be a perfect way to introduce your child to first aid and give them the necessary skills to be calm in an emergency situation and help someone in need. You also get special babysitter programs that will give you all the necessary requirements that you need to look after young children. Most parents want to know that their children are in safe hands with someone who can help them if necessary.

As you learn CPR and first aid you will have a much better understanding of how to save someone’s life. You will be able to offer someone resuscitation and start CPR until an ambulance can arrive, you will be able to clean, disinfect and bandage a wound of any kind, you will know exactly what to do if someone gets stung or bitten by an insect or animal, and you will be able to keep someone calm and relaxed under pressure. There are lots of first aid training courses available that cover certain aspects in more detail, so once you have completed your basic one, you can move on to the others and learn a lot more.

Getting First Aid Kit Supplies

If you are travelling a fairly long distance, it is a good idea to carry first aid kit supplies with you. You will have to make sure that you have everything you could possibly need in the case of an emergency or even just if someone has a headache. The best thing to do to make sure that you have everything is to make a checklist or get one from the internet, which has the correct first aid kit supplies listed as per government regulations.

A Medical Kit Identified

Aerostich-First-Aid-2Most of the time, the symbol for a first aid kit is a green background with a white cross on it, but many people recognize a first aid kit as a white box or bag with a red cross on it. A medical kit can also be identified with the Star of Life on it. Whichever you prefer, you should always carry your kit with you and even keep one in your house just in case there are accidents and you need first aid for open wounds or someone gets sick in the middle of the night.

What A Medical Kit Should Include

The majority of the contents of the first aid kit will be to deal with certain emergencies. This includes:

  • burns
  • cuts
  • pain
  • insect stings and bites
  • dehydration
  • cold

The official first aid kit supplies can be categorized into the following:

  • Airway, Breathing and Circulation (ABC’s)
  • Trauma Injuries
  • Personal Protective Equipment
  • Instruments and Equipment
  • Medication

For the ABC’s you will need to get a face shield and pocket mask for performing sterile resuscitation. Some advanced or commercial kits will also contain a bag valve mask and a manual aspirator among other things. For the trauma injuries, you should be prepared with various dressings, gauze, plasters, bandages, saline, soap, antiseptic, and in advanced kits, haemostatic to help the blood to clot in severe injuries.

Equipment And Medication

Personal Protective Equipment

When you move on to the personal protective equipment you will include:

  • gloves
  • goggles
  • surgical mask to reduce the spread of infection

Instruments And Equipment

The instruments and equipment that you will need to carry include:

  • trauma shears
  • tweezers
  • scissors
  • alcohol pads or antiseptic rub
  • a thermometer
  • an emergency blanket
  • penlight

You will have to think about every eventuality that might occur and prepare for it. You should always include pain killers including aspirin, anti nausea tablets, diarrhea tablets (codeine is a pain killer as well), an epipen, rehydrate, poison treatments, antiseptic ointments, burn gel, antihistamine cream, and any other medication that you feel necessary for your family, such as asthma emergency treatment.

The amount of items that you include in the kit may vary depending on how far you are travelling and where you are going. If you are going on a car journey for a day and you will reach a destination where there is a pharmacy, you might want to leave out some of the items if you do not have enough space. It is a good idea though to keep your first aid kit supplies with you at all times and ensure that if you use something you restock. You never know what can happen, and it is always good to be prepared especially when you are on the road travelling long distances where a pharmacy is not in sight.
